Situ\u00e9s dans une r\u00e9gion montagneuse longtemps isol\u00e9e, ces villages aux maisons de style gassho tiraient leur subsistance de la culture du m\u00fbrier et de l&rsquo;\u00e9levage du ver \u00e0 soie. Leurs grandes maisons au toit de chaume \u00e0 double pente tr\u00e8s accentu\u00e9e sont uniques au Japon.<\/p>\n<p>La principale caract\u00e9ristique des maisons en bois de ces villages est leur toit de chaume en forme de triangle pentu, comme des mains en pri\u00e8re (gassho), afin de supporter le poids de la neige, abondante dans cette r\u00e9gion. Ce sont de grandes maisons de 18m de long sur 10m de large sur quatre niveaux, o\u00f9 plusieurs g\u00e9n\u00e9rations vivent ensemble.
