The Lawa or Lua as the northern Thai call them, are found only in Thailand. I heard that they were already in Thailand before the Thais arrived.
Most Lawa villages are indistinguishable from Thai settlements. We visited La Up, a Lawa village located on the Bo Luang plateau, near Mae Sariang. There, they still live a largely traditional life, although the majority have adopted Buddhism (they were animists and ancestor- worshippers) and Thai style houses.
