Purification at the Tirta Empul Temple, Bali

The way this young girl was following her parents and praying in the water, in front of each “head”, by herself, really impressed me.

Tirta Empul is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu near the town of Ubud in Bali.  It is famous for its holy water where Balinese Hindu people go for purification. The temple pond has spring which gives out fresh water regularly, water that is considered as holy (or Amritha) by local people.  The Temple was built in 962 A.D. during the Warmadewa dynasty at a site where there was a important water spring.

Full moon day, Tirta Empul Temple, Bali

During the full moon, large number of people gather there and one can see whole family lining up to purify themselves in the water, making offerings to the gods. As usual in  Bali, people are very friendly and eager to provide explanation as to what is happening, sharing their culture with others.
