Khiva – the City Museum

Khiva was a major trading center on the famous Silk Road. All the caravans had a stop here on their way to China and back.

The old city has an authentic atmosphere. Itchan Kala, the center, is a fortress where are concentrated all the architectural masterpieces of Khiva. One can see marvelous minarets, stone-paved alleys curves, numerous madrassa with lacy rough mosaic, gigantic ancient walls. The smile of the people of Khiva is pure gold.

Khiva is a unique monument town, completely preserved in the cultural style of the region. In 1967, during the Soviet time, it was proclaimed a town-reserve. In 1990 the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
