Kabukichō, often called the “Sleepless Town”, is an entertainment and red-light district located near Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. I lived near this area for several years and crossed through it every evening coming home from work. It is the location of many movie theaters, shops, restaurants, hostess bars, host bars, love hotels and nightclubs.
The district’s name comes from late-1940s plans to build a kabuki theater: although the theater was never built, the name stuck.
