Nepalese Newar, Kathmandu, Nepal

Newar man, from a village in the Kathmandu valley

I used to dream about the “Road to India” in the early 70’s, and Kathmandu, one of the final destinations, has always been a name with a special sound for me. The valley, the country — Nepal, the mountains, the people, the temples, all these were part of the dream, part of the discussion and travel planning, part of the stories of the older people who actually went there. I was around 15, and it really was a fascinating topic for me.

It took me a few years before I actually was able to go there.  I went there overland, slowly, hitch-hiking, driving a car, taking local trains and buses. And then I finally sat down on one of these beautiful temples on Durbar Square, and I met these wonderful people, the inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley, the Newars.
