Maiko in Miyagawa-Cho, Kyoto

This post is also available in: French

Every day, between 5:30 and 6 pm, the Maiko (apprentice Geisha) walk from their home (Okiya) to the tea house (Ochaya) where they’ll work for the evening.  Miyagawa-Cho is one of the five old traditional Geisha districts of Kyoto (花街 – hanamachi, which literally means “flower town”).

The whole district has been renovated, but the tradition remains unchanged. These 30 minutes offer a travel in time that is very special to me.

I’m glad to announce that this picture has won the 1st price of the monthly contest of the American magazine Popular Photography — May 2015 issue.
