Young woman in Harar, Ethiopia

This post is also available in: French

Harar in the eastern part in Ethiopia, is a old fortified city (Jugol). For centuries, Harar has been a major commercial centre. According to Sir Richard Burton Harar is the birthplace of the khat plan, which we see just about everywhere. I heard that the original domesticated coffee plant is also from Harar.

The inhabitants of Harar represent several different ethnic groups, both Muslim and Christian, including the Oromo, Somali, Amhara, Gurage and Tigray. The Harari (“People of the City”) women wear beautiful and colorful dresses.
